Join knitting in the round without a gap

Working in circles in knitting can be a little tricky for beginners, but don't be intimidated by it, face it as another challenge that you will sail through. If you want to make pieces without seams or with few seam areas, you need to learn to work in a circle.

You can work with double pointed needles if you feel comfortable, or you can use circular needles which are two needles joined by a flexible cord. To make socks, sleeves, gloves, hats or any seamless tubular garment, you must work in a circle.

Here I will teach you one of the many ways to close the circle without leaving a hole. It is a very simple technique that can be used with both double pointed and circular needles.

In this tutorial I'm going to use circular needles and I'll take the opportunity to show you how the magic loop technique works with these needles.

Step by step:

I will work with a 1×1 rib, that is, K1 x P1.

When cast-on, make one more stitch but don't close the circle yet. Then knit the first row leaving the extra stitch undone. It remains on the left needle.
Divide the stitches on the right needle in half and pull the flexible cord to form the magic loop.
Pull the flexible cable until each half of the stitches are evenly distributed on both needles. Note that on the left needle we have the extra stitch (which was not worked) on the end.
Now pull the right needle until your stitches are on the flexible cord, but be careful not to undo the magic loop, pull enough so that you can release the needle with some of the cord.
Now with the right needle, lift the first stitch from the left needle and pass it over the extra stitch that is at the end.
The circle is closed.
