German cast-on for cuff-down socks

The German cast-on is very easy and is great when we need to knit a piece with a stretch edge. It's ideal for pieces that start at the hem or cuff like cuff-down socks, mittens, hat brims… and wherever else you think an stretch edge will look cool.

This method is very similar to the long-tail but to get the stretchier edge you need to twist in the opposite direction. At first it will look a little confusing but after a few stitches you will notice that it is quite simple.

Step by step:

As preparation, you need to make a slip knot and position the tail of the yarn towards your thumb, and the yarn coming out of the ball towards your index finger.

Position the yarn as if you were going to make a long-tail. Exactly like in the photo above.
Dip the needle under the two strands of yarn on your thumb. From left to right.
The needle is now under the two strands of yarn coming out of the thumb. As in the photo above.
Insert the needle into the loop around the thumb. From top to bottom.
Now move the needle from left to right.
And take the needle outside of the yarn wrapped around your index finger and go under the yarn to catch it.
Bring the needle to the left (over the loop around the thumb) and insert the needle into the loop around the thumb. Upwards.
Twist the needle and draw under the yarn of the thumb. From right to left.
Loosen the ring around the thumb and the yarn that passes through the index finger.
Pull both ends of the yarn to adjust the stitch. At each stitch it is important to make this adjustment so that the cast-on does not become irregular. This will result in a nicer edge.
